A Little Education
The Internet is an amazing thing. I remember living without it when I was younger and I just don’t know how I managed. When I was in college at NYU, I was an intern in the Costume Department of Saturday Night Live. I spent my weekends running around New York City (and sometimes outside of the city!) trying to find specific items for sketches. Do you have any idea how hard it was to find Chicago Bears team jerseys in New York in 1993?? Now all you have to do is log on the Bears Website and you can order as many as you want and get them overnighted to you. I bet the intern doing my job these days has it *much* easier than I did!
But, I digress.
My latest obsession with the Internet is learning the power of social media. It really is a blessing and a curse. It can unite people and it can kill long friendships. I have personally fallen victim to the latter during the Boston Marathon bombings when I asked some people to remove some posts that were too revealing of other people’s personal information. But you can’t really call those people friends, now can you?
But here’s a wonderful thing about it. I am a life-long watcher of local news, specifically our ABC affiliate, WCVB, Channel 5, Boston. Especially in the morning. And I’ve been following a lot of the early morning folks on Twitter, especially the weekend folks. I love how when they tweet to me, I usually get a comment or an answer. Especially from my morning news BFF, Jim Lokay (you can follow him @LokayWCVB). I feel like if I ever get a chance to meet him in person I’ll feel like I’ve known him my whole life. Anyway, WCVB aired a story the other day about the rise in esophageal cancer. I went online to find it and couldn’t. They re-aired in on Sunday morning. So I tweeted my BFF:
This is why I love Twitter.
And you should all watch this video about esophageal cancer – it’s important viewing. And thank you, Jim Lokay, for getting it to me!!! Your friend, @RedLipsRunner
Happy Holidays!!!!
